Singer songwriter Nes Powers: Something about her is dif’rent
By Marivir Montebon
New York - Nes Powers is one upcoming icon who’s steadily making waves with her R&B music. Her original song 'Everything about me is dif'rent' on her debut album with the same title had reached Grammy consideration. She has been a two-time awardee of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) gold album award for having sold over 500,000 albums.
In 2023, the Women Songwriters Hall of Fame (WSHOF) named a scholarship after her in order to support women musicians.
Powers has guested in Awesome Media’s Conversations with MM podcast on April 10, 2024 where she shared her journey as a songwriter and singer. Originally from New Jersey, she currently lives in West Virginia and performs in the Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia areas. She is an artist of the That 555 Lyfe label.
During the CMM podcast, Powers said she preferred to be with the indie label as the producers primarily focus on the growth of the artist. She said she has always been more comfortable as a song writer than a performer.
In her single Something about her is dif’rent, the producers sensitively switched on that psyche of ‘just do you’ when performing. And boom! The song simply soared.
Powers started of as a hip-hop musician, she transitioned quite easily to R & B where she grew up into with both parents who were into the kind of music.
She recalled having started off her career candidly as a starving artist in Queens, New York and subsequently took a hiatus for a couple of years in West Virginia. Now, she’s back in the industry - front and center - and definitely making waves.
Asked about her perspective in the immediate future, Powers said that she will continue to push for her music and told budding artists that it is “to know the entertainment business” in order to flourish alongside their creative selves.
On June 7, Powers will perform her latest single “Stay” which she wrote in collaboration with top-billed jazz musician Christian de Mesones (of the You only live twice, Hispanica, In his vision fame) at the WSHOF Awards in Washington, DC. #
